We have to decide soon whether we want Julie to be vaccinated as the first round of vaccines starts at 2 months of age. I am really on the fence on this one since there is so much info out there about why vaccines are unsafe, unnecessary, can cause illnesses and damage, and may be linked to autism and learning and developmental disabilities.
But, I would hate to choose not to get Julie vaccinated and then have her get one of the illnesses she would have been protected against. I guess I have to do some research and figure this out soon!
Any thoughts on this issue?

I'd do it. The links to autism are NOT definitive. In fact, recently, they have steered away from that.
IMO, it's better to protect her from illnesses. We all turned out fine.
Personally, we vaccinate Logan.
As it happens, I just picked up a sheet from the heath unit with some websites you might find useful with your research:
www.immunize.cpha.ca
www.caringforkids.cps.ca
www.phac-aspc.gc.ca
www.canadian-health-network.ca
www.cdc.ca
www.immunizationinfo.org
www.immunize.org
www.childrens vaccine.org
www.who.int/vaccines.
This list is compliled by the "Canadian Coalition for Immunization Awareness and Promotion". They do say to be careful with reading info on the internet, as not everything is factual (duh!). One thing they said that I likes is:
A trustworthy website will:
- Provide information based on solid scientific research, not on opinions. Research is often supported by universities or professional associations and is also subject to peer review.
- Provide references and links to support its statements.
I don't know if there is a link to autism... but the one thing on this info sheet that's definitely true is, "Stories about children who became sick or died are hard to read objectively. Even when pain and sickness happen, be aware that there is no substitute for scientific study."
Some of the anti-immunization sites I've seen rely heavily on the impact of such sad stories.
Anyways... whatever your decision, do the research and make sure you are doing what you feel is best for Julie. *hugs*
From what I gather, it's a political and personal decision...definitely a toughie for any parent to have to make.
Have you considered consulting your mid-wife or physician that you trust?
I agree with Nej and
Niki. If it were my child I would definitely be getting him/her vaccinated.
Two things to keep in mind
1) A lot of schools these days ask for vaccination records when enrolling your children.
2) A lot of mothers (myself in the future included) will not want their infant child near a kid who hasn't been vaccinated since they will be succeptible until they can get vaccinated. I know that this is also a major issue at pediatricians offices these days as well.
I am leaning towards getting the vaccines, I just want to make sure I have all the relevant information I need so that it's an informed decision I can feel comfortable with. I can see points to both sides, so it's a tough one.
I am taking Julie to the midwives tomorrow for a check-up, so I will ask them for information then.
Let us know what your midwife says... I'd be interested to hear.
