Blast from the past

I met up with my friend from highschool last night. We were best friends in grades 9 and 10, so it was nice to catch up with her. The funny thing was, when I walked into the cafĂ© where we met, 2 other former friends from our highschool were also there – it was somewhat of a reunion! Anyways, I had a very nice visit and it was great to catch up.

Tonight is my only free evening this week, so I am really looking forward to the time to just relax.

I still have a few vacation days and some banked OT for 2008, so I am trying to decide what to do with that. I have enough for 5 days off. I spoke with our office administrator yesterday and I have a few options. Option 1 would be to use the time before I start my mat leave. Option 2 would be to tack that time on right after I leave (so I would work until the 16th, but get paid until the 23rd, which would delay the start of my mat leave by a week). Option 3 would be to keep the time and have it when I return in January 2010. Option 4 would be to get paid out on the time, but apparently this causes some difficulties when applying for EI since my last paycheck would be so much larger than typical.

I am leaning towards Option 1. My back has been feeling a bit better in the last couple weeks, but I think a few days off here and there would really help my last few weeks at work be more comfortable. I am thinking about taking the days off between Christmas and New Years. Because of the way the holidays fall and our other office closures, I already get the 24th, 25th, 26th, Jan 1st, and Jan 2nd off. So, if I use 3 vacation days for the other days between Christmas and New Years, then my last day of work before Christmas would be December 23rd and then I wouldn’t be back until January 5th, at which point I’d only have 2 weeks left since my last day of work will be January 16th. As for the other 2 vacation days, I am thinking about taking 2 Wednesdays in December off to break up the week a bit and make it a little more comfortable. So, I’m thinking about taking December 3rd and 17th off as well; just as relaxing days. So, that’s the plan! Here’s hoping I get approved for those days off! I will submit my request today, so I’ll likely hear back within a few days.

Oh, and I also found out that my company will be providing some type of top-up while I am on leave. I don’t know yet how much or for how long. Apparently the official policy is being created this week and I will probably find out more details within the next week or so. I wasn’t expecting my company to provide any type of top-up, so I will consider anything I receive as gravy!

My two cents on your vacation / banked time... I would suggest keeping at least a few days for Option 2. This way, if your midwife puts you on rest for whatever reason as you near the end of your pregnancy, you won't be caught off-guard and will have those few days to play with and let you get your affairs in order. :)

Since I am starting my maternity leave on January 16th, that is still 2.5 weeks before my due date. I did talk to my boss about that date though and it is flexible. So, if in my last month, I need to be put on bedrest or something, I can always start my leave earlier. I'm glad I have that flexibility.

I decided to take your advice. I have requested 4 days off in December, which uses all my remaining vacation for 2008, but I am going to keep my banked OT in case I need an afternoon off here and there in the first 2 weeks of January (my last 2 weeks before leave). My back has been giving me grief on and off for the last couple of weeks, so I can only imagine how uncomfortable I am going to be in a month or two!
